Research
I am a cultural anthropologist with a joint appointment in New College and the Department of Anthropology at The University of Alabama. As a researcher, I am primarily interested in practice-based, bottom-up expressions of national belonging. By training and by inclination, I am curious about the psychological dimension of cultural experience, especially the perspectives of particular individuals as they negotiate their positionality within the broader cultural milieu. My earlier research focused on Polish national identity in relation to post-communist reforms and European integration. My current project is on Jewish heritage in Poland. I have also done research on Sasak potters of Lombok, Indonesia.
